What does it mean to be born again?
To be born again means to receive salvation and be saved through receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. Salvation is God’s will for us (John 3:16; 2 Peter 3:9). All His abundant blessings are freely available in salvation. It includes everything Jesus died to provide. A new life, peace with God, righteousness, mercy, perfect health, faith, unconditional love, deliverance, power and joy. God immediately grants these gifts to those who accept His conditions of repentance and faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.”
The New Testament Greek words for salvation are the verb “sozo,” and the noun “soteria,” all inclusive terms meaning: saved, healed, delivered, pardoned, rescued, protected, preserved, made whole, cured, set free and restored. Salvation is available in Jesus alone (John 14:6; Acts 4:12), and is dependent on God alone for provision, assurance, and security.
How do we receive salvation?
We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8). First, we must hear the gospel—the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection (Ephesians 1:13). Then, we must believe—fully trust the Lord Jesus (Romans 1:16). This involves repentance, a changing of mind about sin and Christ (Acts 3:19), and calling on the name of the Lord (Romans 10:9-10, 13).
What happens when we are born again?
The Bible states, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).”
- We obtain right standing with God. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
- We become a new creation. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- We possess a new spirit. (Ezekiel 36:26,27)
- We become a child of God. (Galatians 3:26)
- We are delivered from Satan's control. (Colossians 1:13,14)
- We are redeemed from the curse. (Galatians 3:13)
- We receive eternal life. (1 John 5:12,13; John 3:16-36)
What should we do after being born again?
- Become a member of a local church and attend regularly. (Hebrews 10:25)
- Be baptized (immersion) with water. (Romans 6:4)
- Receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:1-4)
- Read, study and meditate on the Word. (2 Timothy 2:15; 1 Peter 2:2)
- Let your mind be renewed by the Word. (Romans 12:1,2)
- Begin living the Word. (James 1:22-25)
- Pray to God. (1 Thessalonians 5:17; James 5:16)
Jesus says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in (Revelations 3:20 NIV).”
